The Barber Shop Owner or Area Renter License permits a business to own, control or operate a barber shop. Both licenses are issued by the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS).

A Barber Shop Area Renter is a licensed barber who works in a barber shop, but is not employed by the owner.

Barbers also must be licensed as barbers.
