Air Facility Registration
Businesses that release pollutants into the air need permits from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). If your business emits low levels of pollutants, you must register as an Air Facility.
Pollutant levels
Here is a table to help you understand the different pollutant levels and the type of permit you need:
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- Volatile organic compounds (VOC)
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Particulate matter (PM)
- Any hazardous air pollutant (HAP)
- Persistent, bioaccumulative or toxic compounds (6 NYCRR Subpart 201-9, Table 1)
If your facility exceeds these criteria, you need a Title V Permit, which is for "major sources," such as industrial plants and mills.
